Flor de Jamaica – Refreshing Iced Hibiscus Tea

This refreshing beverage is drank all over the world with many different names, from Latin America to Africa and China. The flowers are full of organic acids and also produce a deep red colour when infused. It is prepared in a similar way to Iced Tea, but the slightly tart and tangy flavour is reminiscent of Cranberry or Mulled Wine.

Served very cold with a mix of Lime and Orange slices this drink is perfect for hot summer days, something we are sadly lacking in England at the moment! But I can still fill up a nice cold glass, sit in a comfy chair and look out of my living room window dreaming of tropical heat and the beaches I could be lying on right at this moment! – Recipe –

8 cups of Water // 1/2 a stick of Cinnamon // 4 Allspice Berries // 2 Cloves // 1 cup of Dried Hibiscus Flowers // 1/4 – 1/2 a cup of Piloncillo or Brown Sugar

  1. Fill a pan with 4 cups of the Water and the Spices. Bring it to a rolling boil.
  2. Turn the heat off and add the Hibiscus Flowers along with the Piloncillo or Brown Sugar, let it stand for 20 minutes and then strain all the solids and discard them.
  3. Add the other 4 cups of Water to the mix and then chill for several hours.
  4. Add ice and some sliced Citrus Fruits into the jug and then serve.
